ALCOHOL has been prohibited at the Martyrs’ Day celebrations at Namugongo shrine in Wakiso district, the organising committee chief, Peter Ngategize, has announced.

“Alcohol will not be sold at the venue and its vicinity,” he said, adding that no meals would be served when the service starts. Food will only be sold until 8:00am and after the service,” he said.

Ngategize was addressing journalists at the Central Police Station in Kampala yesterday.

Over 1.5 million Christians are expected to participate in the annual event.
Police spokesperson Judith Nabakooba said a post had been established at the venue to ensure safety.

Posters with emergency numbers, she added, would be fixed at vantage points.

Police commissioner Felix Ndyomugyenyi said vehicles, other than lorries and buses, were to access the Catholic shrine via Kireka and Kyaliwajjala.

He added that the lorries and buses would go through Bweyogerere and will park at the shrine grounds.

Ndyomugyenyi said motorists heading to the Protestant shrine should branch off at Bweyogerere and use Musawo Road.

VIPs will park at Namugongo Secondary School, he said, adding that vehicles found not following the instructions would be towed away.
