SHOPPERS spend a large percentage of their salary on groceries. Agnes Kyotalengerire brings you tips on how to make grocery shopping cheaper for your wallet

Shop without the kids
When you shop with kids, they will pester you to buy junk food although it is not on the budget, so to avoid this, go without them.

Choose store brand products
Store brand products are cheaper than their name-brand equivalents. But many are reluctant to buy them because they look less appealing. But if they cost less and taste the same, why spend more?

When there’s a sale, stock up
Sale items can be a great deal. If it’s an item you normally use, stock up on them.

Make one large trip instead of many small ones
Reduce the frequency of your trips to avoid temptation and to save on time and fuel. Shop in bulk or purchase all the items you need on your shopping trip.

Walk or bike
Walk or ride a bike to the shops, because such means can only allow you to carry one shopping bag full of groceries.

Ditch the basket
If you’re dashing into the supermarket to pick up milk and bread, don’t use a basket. Baskets induce you to buy more.

Ignore what’s not on your budget The more you interact with something, the more likely you are to buy it. Many unplanned purchases come as a result of the shopper seeing, touching or smelling items. So stay focused.

Beware of marketing strategies
Avoid marketing ploys designed to draw your attention to a particular product.
