RISING Ugandan sprinters Agnes Aneno, Christopher Nwanga, and Denis Sanga took Nairobi by storm over the weekend with performances that saw them hit the qualifying marks for the World Junior Athletics Championships.

The competitions are due July 8-12 in Sudtirol, Italy. Aneno had already qualified for the 800m event during the Kyabazinga meet last month.

But over the weekend, Aneno won a 200m race and came second in the 400m at a local competition here where some of Kenya’s best competed.

Aneno, 17, the Tororo Rock High School S4 student proved her prowess in the 200m, winning in a time of 25.3 seconds and erasing her personal best of 26.0. She beat Kenya’s Vivian Chelangat (25.6) into second. The electronic and hand time qualifying marks for the world event stand at 25.7 and 25.5 respectively.

In the 400m, Aneno’s time of 56.1 was inside the qualifying mark of 57.7 (hand) and 57.80 (electronic) to guarantee her an opportunity to represent Uganda at the games. Kenya’s Betty Chelangat won the race in 55.8.

“My coming to Nairobi has helped me a great deal. The standards here were very high, and I put up my best shot to book a ticket for the global event outside my country,” an elated Aneno said after the race at the Nyayo National Stadium.

Christopher Nwang clinched gold medal in the 100m in a time of 10.6 seconds to qualify for both the junior and youth world championships.

He also qualified for the world youth championship 200m despite finishing fifth in 22.7. The qualifying mark is 22.7.

His compatriot Denis Sanga finished fourth in the 200m in 22.5 to also make it to the team. He had also finished fourth in 400m in 49.5 to qualify for Italy whose qualifying mark is 50.4.
