MALNUTRITION is threatening residents of Ngai sub-county in Oyam district following a food shortage that has hit the area. Mothers are feeding children on one meal a day.

Local authorities have warned that many people will continue starving if the community does not plant crops which are resistant to drought. “My children are malnourished because we have been going without breakfast and lunch for the last six months,” said Susan Acio, a resident.

Acio’s husband was killed by the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) in 2004. “If the LRA had not killed my husband, maybe he would have provided for the children,” she said.

The area LC3 chairperson, Beatrice Okello, blamed the disaster on the community, saying the residents were negligent and lazy to store food for their families.

The education secretary, Patrick Abeja, said the problem was compounded by drought. He added that pupils were going to school on empty stomachs, adding that their performance had declined.
