THE tenants of the Naguru-Nakawa housing estates in Kampala have asked the Government to offer them 73 acres of the land in Naguru.

The two estates occupy 162 acres of land. Naguru sits on 85 acres. Under the Naguru-Nakawa Estates Residents Association, the tenants told journalists on Tuesday they had identified financers who could invest $70m (sh140b) to redevelop the area with a population of 1,750.

The Government plans to re-develop the dilapidated estates through a private developer, Opec Prime Properties based in the UK. The project has, however, faced resistance from the tenants who complained of lack of transparency in the process of finding an investor.

The Inspector General of Government investigated the matter and advised against the venture but the President in April ordered the tenants to vacate to pave way for the works that start next year.
