Ask the Doctor with Dr. Gloria Ndagire

Dear Doctor,
What could be the cause of pimples? I have had them since I was 15 years of age. I am now 19. Could the cause be due to adolescence or an STD? If yes, what could be the possible cheap ways of putting them off my face? They stress me!

Dear TM,
PIMPLES, also known as acne, are common during adolescence. The condition is associated with the increase in hormonal production during puberty.

The hormones cause the sweat glands to enlarge and produce a substance called sebum which blocks the hair follicles.

Acne runs in families and is in individuals whose close family members had it.

Exposure to chemicals such as chloride as well as the use of steroids also increases the likelihood of developing acne. Acne cannot be sexually transmitted and is not contagious.

Avoid stress because this increases the production of the hormones that promote acne. Cut down on foods with readily available sugar content such as white bread. Eat lots of foods rich in vitamin A and E.

Wash your face regularly. This helps to unlock the pores of the skin. Oral antibiotics as well as antibiotic creams such as tetracycline may be useful.

You need a dermatologist’s advice and prescription. Acne that begins during puberty improves with age. It is only part of a passing phase in life.
