COACH Sam Timbe’s chance of lifting a third CECAFA Club championship title hangs on the line after his Rwandan side Atraco was walloped 6-1 by hosts El Merreikh on Tuesday evening. Atraco takes on Mathare next, who were 3-0 winners over Djibouti’s Kartileh in the opening encounter on Tuesday.

Timbe, who won the regional club trophy with SC Villa (2005) and Police (2006), will now need an extra punch when he takes on debutants Mathare FC of Kenya in a-must-win tie as he tries to recover from Tuesday’s loss.

With Merreikh, who have won the title twice in 1986 and 1994, needing only a win from paperweights Kartileh, the pressure will be on Timbe to find an immediate solution.

But it will be a hard task especially after losing dependable midfielder Charles Kawuma, who was sent off by referee Fred Mufta for a second bookable offence in Tuesday’s game. The Ugandan tactician will be hoping that striker Isa Kagabo, who netted the only goal, and Ugandan pair of Johnson Bagoole and Godfrey Kateregga are at their best.

Merreikh coach, Croatian Radan Jacknet, who was happy with the day one results, will be looking at an offset win to ease the pressure ahead of the group’s last encounter against Mathare on Saturday. The top two in each of the three groups and the best two losers advance to the quarterfinals.
