OKAY, for most of us down here in the Pearl of Africa, it doesn’t matter what we have or don’t have as our kitchenware, as long we can have food on our tables, right?

Not a bad idea, but then, like Gideon Kiberu who runs a home appliance store at Garden City says: “This is the 21st century and it is no longer just about having anything that can cook in the kitchen.”

Rice cooker
Assuming that rice is the primary staple food average urban dwellers who poke fun at the rigours of lighting a stove, boiling water and checking on the rice every minute to add water or vary the heat.

That is when the advantages of the rice cooker come in. It saves time as you boil the rice in about half the usual time, allowing you the luxury of checking on the food at the timed interval.

It will dry the rice well and can be used to cook other cereals like maize, desserts and also steaming vegetables. The price range: sh50,000 to sh300,000.

The coffee-maker
One can mix coffee the simple way by adding water to it or filtering through a sieve.

However, if you are not one to serve your guests with the common coffee concoction, you may opt for the complicated drip coffee brewer that simply drips the coffee into a pot or the more complex espresso machines for more concentrated coffee beverage.

This produces coffee by forcing high-pressure hot water through finely ground coffee powder.

Toasters
Toasting is simply heating bread so it gets brown and acquires a brown colour, topped with cheese, egg or butter. You don’t have to use that frying pan again for toasting your bread.

You can find toaster ovens, grills and specialised micro waves in shops around. You can can even acquire an appliance that will get you toasting sweet potatoes.
