Dear Judith, I am sorry that you have had to endure that discomfort for all this time. Vaginal candidiasis is not an acquired infection. The fungus exists as part of the normal inhabitants of the vagina in almost all women.
Symptoms result from overgrowth of the fungi. Most women experience at least one episode in their life time. Some get recurrent symptoms. This may be due to factors such as pregnancy, use of oral contraceptives and diabetes.
Any thing that interferes with the normal ph balance in the vagina causes the organisms to over grow. Deep washing of the vagina also increases the likelihood of the symptoms recurring.
Avoid excessive ingestion of sweet foods as these encourage overgrowth of the organisms.
Youghurt helps to restore the normal environment of the vagina so eat plenty of this.
There are a number of anti-fungal medications on the market which could help control the symptoms. Some of these need to be taken for prolonged periods in order to be effective.
Vaginal candidiasis is not a common cause of dryness. However, vaginal dryness can cause itching and burning that may resemble the symptoms of candidiasis.
It can be caused by child birth, breast feeding or medications but may also be psychological.
Drinking lots of water as well as having a balanced diet may help. Use only ph balanced soaps and detergents. You may use a jelly to provide lubrication. This can be bought over the counter.
Avoid stress as this affects the normal lubrication of the vagina. You may need to see a doctor for proper assessment. Good luck.
