Dear Doctor, I am a 24-year-old student at the university. I recently visited a hospital because I had flu but was told my blood pressure was high. Could this have been due to the flu? I thought high blood pressure was a disease of the elderly. Please help! Paul
Dear Paul, BLOOD pressure refers to the force with which the blood moves through the blood vessels. This depends on the force with which the heart contracts and the flexibility of the vessels. The normal value ranges between 90-119, systolic and 60-79 diastolic.
This varies with age. Your blood pressure needs to be taken on three different occasions, at least one week apart and in the absence of significant stress and caffeine intake.
Flu does not cause the blood pressure to rise. High blood pressure is not an exclusive disease of the elderly. Other risk factors include a family history of the disease, excessive weight gain, high cholesterol levels, sodium sensitivity and excessive alcohol intake. Exercise is good for you.
Eat healthy by cutting down on red meats and foods containing a lot of cholesterol. Cut down on salt intake. Elevated blood pressure may be a sign of an underlying condition.
You need to visit a doctor for proper physical assessment.
