RESIDENTS of Namugongo have petitioned the National Environment Management Authority over the construction of a chemical factory between the Catholic and Protestant shrines.
“We are not aware that NEMA has given a green light to the establishment of a factory in a residential area,†read the letter dated June 10.
The petitioners, led by Yokasi Bwambale Bihande (MP Bukonzo East), Stephen Kadaali and Paschal Mujasi, told Dr. Aryamanya Mugisha, the executive director of the environment watchdog, that they were never consulted over the construction of the factory.
But two weeks after the petition, the pace of the night construction has intensified, increasing fears among the residents.
Asked why the watchdog has not intervened, Wasswa Ayazika, an official, said the matter would soon be addressed.
LC1 chairperson for Nsaawo Zone Edward Mugamba said the owner, Ssalongo Samona, had been summoned to explain.
However, Jamila Mukasa found at the site, said they were constructing a warehouse since Samona’s Busega factory had become small. Busega is located more than 20 kilometres from Namugongo.
