MPs’ tricks
MP Beatrice Byenkya (NRM) seems to know her colleagues’ tricks very well. She recently warned Elijah Okupa (FDC) not take MPs for a ride by taking them through the longest route in order to convince them that Kasilo is very far away and therefore needs a new district. But Okupa assured the MPs that there was only one direct route and no meandering. This was during the parliamentary public service and local government committee which was receiving submissions from MPs on the proposed new districts. Mps are supposed to visit most of the areas especially where there are controversies.

Tanna unhappy

MP Tanna Sanjay (Tororo municipality) recently told a parliamentary committee that the wrangles in Tororo over the creation of new district have left his integrity and person injured. His bitterness has been caused by Emmanuel Otaala and William Oketcho who feel that the creation of the new district must not take away the name Tororo. Tanna charged that his colleagues had taken it upon themselves to talk on behalf of his constituents yet over 60 percent had voted him into Parliament. He also alleged that the Mps had solicited signatures in his constituency which they were to present to parliament in regard to the controversy between the Japadhola and the Iteso in Tororo. Sorry, Mr Tanna, uneasy lies the head that wears a crown.

Kawooya’s stand
‘Yellow Lady’ Anifa Bangirana Kawooya (NRM) will agree with Mps on most issues except one—annoying President Museveni. As the MPs proposed to take more aggressive and provocative means to force the President to appoint commissioners on the Equal Opportunities Commission recently, Anifa quickly proposed: “No, we can only resort to that when we have exhausted all means. His Excellency the President should be given a benefit of the doubt.” The commission was created three years ago but it has been non- operational due to lack of commissioners who are appointed by the President.

Blunt Kasirye
Maverick Brig Kasirye Ggwanga never runs short of words. Featuring on a radio talk-show to discuss the expansion of Kampala recently, he had no kind words for the discussants who had talked before him. He simply looked around and said: “All those who have been talking about Buganda are not friends of Buganda. Actually they are a disaster.” Fortunately, there is a minister for disaster preparedness.
