FIVE teachers are on payrolls of more than two schools in Amuru district. Only 815 out of 1,037 teachers were on the payroll and about 83 had an unknown status, an impromptu headcount exercise of primary school teachers in the district established.

The exercise, conducted last month by sub-county chiefs and community development officers, revealed that 79 ghost teachers were on the payroll, while 114 teachers were believed to have joined NGOs or transferred to other districts.

The report also indicated that most of the transferred teachers never reported to their new work stations.

“There are 908 teachers in Amuru district getting salaries, and yet the number of teachers on the ground is less,” Gilbert Olanya, the Amuru district secretary for education and sports, said.

“We shall collect all the money that these teachers have been eating,” Olanya added.

He said last year, sh9.8m was collected from teachers who had absconded from teaching.

An overall 78.8% (817 teachers) turned up for the head count exercise. Pabbo sub-county registered the highest attendance, while Koch-Goma sub-county recorded the lowest turn up, the report revealed. The report noted that the teacher to pupil ratio in the district was estimated at 1:80.
