What is that painless swelling?

SWELLINGS on the anus are usually caused by a condition called haemorrhoids. This refers to masses or clamps of tissue within the anal canal that contain blood vessels. These only cause problems when they enlarge.

Dear Doctor,
Last year I got small swelling on the anus which has now expanded in size. What could this be? It is not painful but its making me uncomfortable. Please help.
Annette

Dear Annette,
SWELLINGS on the anus are usually caused by a condition called haemorrhoids. This refers to masses or clamps of tissue within the anal canal that contain blood vessels. These only cause problems when they enlarge.

They may be internal or external. They may however become painful if they become constricted. They may enlarge as result of inadequate fibre intake, hard stools and pregnancy among others.

You should increase your consumption of fruits, vegetables, grains and cereals. This will improve your bowel movements, make your stool softer.

If the swelling starts to cause you significant pain, you could consider surgical procedures to remove the swelling.
