POLIVINYL chloride, PVC, a chlorinated hydrocarbon is now a major component both in building and décor. Its basic building blocks are chlorine, carbon and hydrogen. PVC home accessories are attractive.
However, environmentalists in the past said PVC was environmentally unfriendly and posed great dangers to human health.
PVC was accused of escalating cancer through water and food in materials such as bottles and plates, but it turned out that water from PVC bottles give an insignificant 1.9% cancer risk.
Environmentalists say PVC has no effect on the environment and one can use it for construction. Orhan Pala, a civil engineer with Turquaz Home Decorations located on First and Second Street in Kampala, dealing in PVC products like doors and windows, says windows and doors made of PVCs give a home a distinctive appearance.
He says from the exterior, PVCs give a house character and from the interior, they give adequate light that one needs and the aesthetic appearance one wants for the house.
The engineer adds that the utmost advantage of windows and doors made of PVCs is that they have a multi functional seal and a five chamber system for acoustic and thermal comfort, which allows one to achieve perfect insulation.
“PVC doors are not just very attractive but they also offer full system-based security,†explains the engineer.
He adds that the system components for PVCs provide a harmonious overall appearance since they can easily combine doors, windows and other construction units with each other.
The engineer says PVC doors and windows allow a maximum use of energy, with a thermal break of the threshold which guarantees a very high thermal insulation.
“PVC doors are smooth running, easy to use and all the components contain security units which increase burglar resistance,†says the engineer.
He also says PVC doors and windows have many other advantages. PVC doors and window products comprise of either single or double glass options which are fitted to leave no allowance for dust and sound pollution.
They are not affected by high temperature thus reducing the expenditure on paints. The inside metal of PVC doors and window is steel, which makes them durable and very strong.
They do not expand or contractand maintain normal room temperature. Doors and windows made of PVC’s are cost friendly since maintenance is low and there is no need for regular cleaning.
