Tenants in Namatogonya village in Kayonza sub-county, Kayunga district on Friday lynched a land agent who had taken prospective buyers to inspect a piece of land on sale.

The residents suspected that they would be evicted from the land without compensation.

The district Police commander, Charles Nuwagira, identified the deceased as Livingstone Ssekamate, who worked with a Kampala-based real estate company.

Ssekamate was ambushed by residents who killed him with clubs, arrows and pangas. They later burnt his body.

A woman, Jennifer Ssekitooleko, who was identified as Ssekamate’s business partner, was beaten into a coma and was taken to Kayunga Hospital. She was later transferred to Mulago Hospital.

Ssekamate, Ssekitooleko and the prospective buyer believed to be a relative of a senior army officer were travelling in a vehicle with army registration number plates.

“On seeing the mob, the trio sensed danger and took off into a nearby forest where residents found Ssekamate and beat him to death,” Nuwagira said.

The residents also threatened to burn the vehicle, but the driver managed to drive it away.

Ssekamate’s body was taken to Kayunga Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination.

Nuwagira condemned the act, saying the Police were carrying out investigations to arrest the leaders of the mob who they plan to charge with murder.

“We are following up the matter and those who will be implicated in the killing shall be arrested. Even if we discover that all residents of the village participated in the murder, we are ready to arrest them because what they did was illegal and the offence can only be heard by the High Court,” he said.
