UGANDA should improve its labour productivity to be competitive globally, Olive Kigongo, the Uganda National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (UNCCI) president, has said.

According to the World Bank’s Global Competitiveness Report for 2008/09, Uganda was the seventh least-competitive country in the world.

“One of the setbacks to competitiveness in Uganda is low labour productivity,” Kigongo said. “Unproductive employees translate into higher labour costs because they require more time to perform the same goal.”

The remarks were made during the launch of a private sector forum held at Hotel Africana in Kampala. UNCCI partnered with the German Technical Cooperation (GTZ) recently under the Promotion of Employment Oriented Vocational Education and Training programme. It aims at strengthening the role of the private sector in improving the qualifications and employability of Ugandans.
