THE Police have impounded 732 jerry-cans of enguli (local brew) in Soroti and Kumi districts in the last two months, the regional Police commander has said. Alison Agaba said 315 jerry-cans were recovered from Kumi and 417 in Soroti after a tip-off by the locals.
“The consumption of enguli has become rampant in Teso,†Agaba said recently. A total of 20 suspects have been prosecuted and fined sh3,000, she explained.
Agaba said most of the enguli impounded was destined for Karamoja. “In Karamoja, cattle rustlers use enguli to gain the courage to raid. They also give it to the animals to drink so that they can run fast,†she said.
Agaba urged the local leaders to pass by-laws which discourage the drinking of enguli, which, she said, had increased crime in the region. “Assault has become common in most places in Teso as a result of drunkenness.
She said they would crack down on those involved in trafficking enguli. “We are thinking of talking to the deputy Inspector General of Police to put check-points on the highways.â€
Agaba cautioned the public against excessive drinking and to embark on income-generating programmes now that there is peace in the region.
