THE last three weeks have been the most exciting in a rather lackluster 2009 Bell league. Three weeks ago everyone was discussing the inevitability of a fourth straight league title for Uganda telecom Kobs only for G4S Pirates to rip the form book with a famous 17-3 victory over Kobs. Many neutrals celebrated this result as it threw the title race wide open.
Some excitement finally
Pirates who have never won a league title marched into the next week as title favourites riding on euphoric momentum and fate with Heathens the only obstacle between them and a shot at their first league title. Well as fate would rather have it Heathens won the game 25-14 but it was not so much the victory but the manner in which Heathens turned on the style in dispatching Pirates.
Heathens on account of their expatriate heritage have been known to play boring tactical 8 man rugby but last Saturday they shocked everyone including this writer as they taught Pirates a lesson in open running rugby. Peter Magona's return as coach player seems to have brought back team work and discipline to the side.
Kobs versus Heathens saga continues
This result means Kobs who made light work of Entebbe Mongers were played back into contention as the league goes down to the wire today at Kampala RUFC when Kobs host old rivals Heathens in what is also being dubbed as a battle of the telecom companies - UTL versus MTN. Again the 'favourites' tag seems to have swung back to Kobs who are hosts today and defending champions but we must remember only one point separated these two sides in the first round with Kobs edging Heathens. All contests between both sides have always been closely fought battles balanced on a knife edge with no clear winner until the final whistle!
As I have been having a torrid time with my crazy predictions I am going to sit on the fence today and say this is one of those games that could go either way.
