FAWE raises funds to educate disadvantaged girls

THE Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE) has launched a drive to raise funds to help disadvantaged girls access higher education in universities and tertiary institutions.
FAWE chairperson Prof. Mary Okwakol said the organisation needed sh1.5b annually to support at least 200 girls.
The beneficiaries will be enrolled for mainly science-based programmes.
The Higher Education Scholarship Programme will benefit female students who have been admitted to university or tertiary institutions, but cannot raise tuition fees.
The organisation has been running a girl education scholarship scheme to assist underprivileged bright girls to attain secondary education.
FAWE initiated the scheme in 1999.
Okwakol said the scheme was based on the assumption that the girls would benefit from government sponsorship in public universities and tertiary institutions. However, she observed that there are limited places under the government sponsorship scheme today.
The initiative was launched by Charles Mbire, the chairman of MTN Uganda, at the Sheraton Hotel in Kampala on Tuesday.
FAWE is currently marking the Girls Education Week under the theme, “Increased investment in girls’ education — a celebration of African women’s leadership through girls’ education in Uganda.â€
FAWE national coordinator Martha Muhwezi said since its inception in Uganda in 1997, the body has supported over 4,000 girls.
