EDITOR—I shuddered when I read on Monday the story that Maj. Gen. Benon Biraaro, supported by environment state minister Jessica Eriyo that Uganda’s national symbol should be changed from the crested crane to a bee. Reason?

Encouraging national development! Their argument is that the crested crane, though beautiful, is lazy! If these are the kind of politicians we have then Uganda is in hot soup. Does someone first look at the national symbol before becoming hardworking?

I am sure the creators of the coat of arms had strong reasons for choosing the crested crane other than Biraaro and Eriyo’s. The reasons for Ugandans not being hard- working are different and have nothing to do with the crested crane.

Why should someone work hard when he sees some Government ministers and other senior officials accumulating wealth very fast without working?

Why should I be hardworking when I see all opportunities for government sponsorship at university, government tenders, etc are not awarded equittably to all Ugandans? If Biraaro and Eriyo have nothing better to suggest in terms of Uganda’s development, it is better for them to shut up.
