THE state of Nalubaale Bridge at Jinja is worrying, the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) has said.

“In recent past the deck system over the cantilevered section of the bridge has shown signs of distress, particularly due to recurring loss of composite action between the deck slabs both transversely between individual deck slabs and longitudinally at the edge beams,” said the UNRA in bid notice inviting applications for pre-qualification for construction works for rehabilitation of the bridge.

“This has further been exacerbated by the increasing effects of traffic loads, causing free movement of individual slabs that can be seen when traffic crosses the elements. This is a threat to the stability of the deck.”
The crossing was built in 1954.

The works ministry carried out repairs on the bridge in 1998 and 2004.

The bridge, located on the River Nile, forms a major crossing on the Northern Corridor route that links Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and DR Congo to the Indian Ocean coast.

According to the notice, the repair work will include underwater repair of 15 reinforced concrete bridge piers, repair of structural reinforced concrete deck above water and on top of deck, strengthening reinforced concrete deck, construction of additional footings on existing concrete structures and erection of fabricated steel structures in restricted area.

Cleaning and repair of the bridge deck drainage system, resurfacing the road on the bridge, providing access and design of all temporary works necessary and full traffic management during the works, are the other works to be done.
