LAWRENCE Ssematimba is expected to open for Uganda in the Four-Day Intercontinental Shield match in Bermuda today.

If coach Ebrahim Mohammed goes through with the decision, Ssematimba will join younger brother Roger Mukasa for Uganda’s opening partnership.

Arthur Kyobe is naturally Mukasa’s partner but he was ruled out of the ten-day tour to Bermuda after being denied transit visas for the United Kingdom.

Also missing the trip is bowler Daniel Ruyange.

Team manager Justin Ligyalingi intimated that the absence of left hander Kyobe would make way for the 27-year-old Ssematimba.

He said: “I think this (Kyobe’s absence) means Ssematimba will open with his younger brother.”

Ssematimba, whose elder brother Frank Nsubuga is also in the team, was in scintillating form in the team’s pre-tour trials and had asked the coach to entrust him with a batting position in Uganda’s top-order.

However, the decision to pair the two right-handed brothers will deny Mohammed’s team the tactical advantage that accrues from a right hand – left hand partnership. Its impact on the opposition fielding and bowling strategy can give a team a crucial tactical variance.

With no left hander, Uganda will have to depend on character and astute decision-making if they are to compete in the gruelling Four-Day encounter.
