UABF drags Bakka’s committee to court

LOCAL amateur boxing body UABF has threatened legal action against the committee appointed by Sports State Minister Charles Bakkabulindi to organise its elections.

LOCAL amateur boxing body UABF has threatened legal action against the committee appointed by Sports State Minister Charles Bakkabulindi to organise its elections.
The UABF executive, through Odongo and Company Advocates, on Monday issued a notice to sue. They insist that the Charles Egou committee has no powers to run federation affairs.
Egou’s team started work as a normalisation committee last year. After an extra-ordinary assembly to harmonise wrangling factions they evolved into a caretaker committee and have set August 29 for elections.
But UABF challenges the legality of the electoral process. “UABF has never been suspended neither was its constitution, so of what logic is a caretaker body,†reasoned a UABF executive member.
UABF argues that the best the committee would have done was carry out its research as a normalisation of the body. It would report back to the minister, who would then forward recommendations to UABF.
UABF also says the committee contravened the federation’s constitution and that of world boxing body AIBA by recognising a parallel body.
Uganda Amateur Boxing Clubs Association, a body of renegade clubs, is led by presidential aspirant Godfrey Nyakana. City lawyer Kavuma Kabenge and MP Issa Kikungwe are the other aspirants.
Egou acknowledged receipt of the notice. He however said he would seek ministerial guidance on the matter.
But he noted that it was insincere of UABF to claim that an electoral process was being imposed on them. “It’s these same UABF leaders who begged us to extend our stay from the normalisation committee because of our neutrality.
“We should solve this matter once and for all through elections,†he argued.
