The Police in Moroto and Nakapiripirit districts have impounded 10,000 litres of enguli (local potent gin) destined for Karamoja.

The gin was found loaded on a truck on the Mbale-Moroto road.

The Police arrested four suspected dealers, all women, from Jinja and Mbale and are helping the Police with investigations.

Nakapiripirit district Police commander, Allan Tarquisin, on Wednesday said despite the implementation of the bylaws banning the transportation of the gin, traders continued to pursue the trade.

“The district council authorities passed this bylaw in 2003 but people have failed to bow to it,” Tarquisin said.

He said those arrested while transporting the gin would soon be taken to court.

“We shall continue apprehending the dealers because they are breaking the law. This gin is causing a lot of crime in the region. We have a duty as law enforcers to protect our people,” he said.

Those arrested were identified as Rosemary Lakeri and Abalo Lopeyok, both residents of ADRA quarters in Maluku, Mbale district.
