AFTER a tough day, one’s bedroom remains the ideal place to relax and vent off the steam. Most individual preferences are outside their rooms.

Some people like a double divan bed while others treasure a thin piece they can spread flat on the floor.
However, most prefer the six-inch spring mattress popularly known as Vono. Others simply need a good mattress.

Baingana Bala, the principal health tutor at the School of Physiotherapy in Mulago Hospital says: “When buying a mattress make sure it is not very hard or very soft. It should be average,” he says.

He says besides hardness, mattresses have different sizes and thickness which range between two and six inches. A mattress should be about four inches because it does not easily cave in and it performs the same purpose as one of six inches.

Beds should be bought from reputable furniture dealers to ascertain they are made from well dried timber.

“Make sure what you buy meets your standards. Alternatively, you could seek professional advice as you make a good choice,” says Bala.

Avoid buying spring beds. The surface of your bed should preferably be made of plywood. Timber rails can also work.
