Serugo faces Briton in world boxing championship campaign

LIGHT flyweight pugilist Ronald Serugo has advanced to the second round of the AIBA World Boxing Championships going on in Milan, Italy.

Serugo, was among the fighters given a bye into the next round and will battle Britain’s Thomas Stubbs today as he seeks to reach the quarter-finals of the world meet.

The Ugandan is battling 40 pugilists from 66 countries in his weight category out of 93 boxers competing at the event fully funded by world boxing body AIBA.

The meet got underway on Monday and concludes on September 12. The selected group comprise of talented boxers drawn from developing countries.

In 2007 two Ugandan boxers Sharif Bogere and Phillip Adyak, disappeared at the world meet in Chicago, US. Both of them turned professional with Bogere being a hit in the paid ranks.

Serugo was Uganda’s only boxer at the Beijing Olympics. He lost to Mongolian eventual silver medalist Serdamba Purevdorj. He is accompanied by Cuban coach Jimenez Gonzalez.
