THE Mountain Dew Falcons outclassed the UCU Canons 83-65 Sunday at YMCA in a hot-tempered match which briefly disintegrated into a mass brawl towards the end, reports Charles Mutebi.

Falcons were 20 points ahead with one minute 25 seconds left when their guard Sunday Okot and his counterpart Ivan Enabu broke out into a fight at the centre of the court.

The pair were immediately joined by their team-mates and for a while the situation threatened to get much worse but after some all-round pushing and shoving, calm was restored.

Enabu and Okot returned to their benches for the rest of the match although the referees Edward Sendi and John Omondi had not disqualified them, as the rules demand.

Also, the officials did not award the mandatory technical fouls for both sides but simply resumed play. It was after the game that they remembered to inform the match commissioner’s bench that the two players had been disqualified.

The referees were blamed for failing to curb the emotions, which had been steadily rising before the fight.

Falcons centre Henry Malinga, who scored a game-high 25 points said the officials could have done better.

“I am surprised the referees didn’t take control of the situation. From the very beginning they failed to take control of the game,” said Malinga.

Canons coach Robert Mugabe took the same line saying, “We were given inexperienced referees and (their poor performance) resulted into that (fight).”

In fairness, the referees seemed out of their depth but nothing can justify the disaster that played out.

Sport governing body FUBA will this week examine the incident and the culprits will have their fate decided.
