THE Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, Sydda Bbumba, has decried corruption among public officials. She called upon muslims to lead morally upright lives in the Ramadhan period.

Bbumba made the appeal on Sunday while closing the 22nd annual Ramadhan convention at the Islamic University in Uganda, Mbale campus

She said the moral standards of public servants had degenerated, leading to embezzlement of funds. “Muslim students should be focused and shun corruption and other evils,” she added.

She thanked the National Resistance Movement Government for according freedom to Muslims to practise their religion. Bbumba said Muslims were investing heavily in education, which led to the development of the Islamic community and the country.

At the same event, privatisation state minister, Rukia Chekamondo, appealed to Muslim women to dress decently. “The Islamic dress code gives dignity and respect to Muslim women but some women have not realised this,”Bbumba said.

She called upon Muslims to compete politically, socially and economically. “You should form groups and engage in income-generating activities like poultry farming to uplift your standards of living,” Chekamondo advised.

She handed over a motorcycle to Imam Abdul Nazur of Buwamwangu. The bike was donated by the Zakat committee of the IUIU, as a starting point in the spread of Islam.

The university rector, Dr. Ahmad Sengendo, appealed to the Muslims to take Koranic study seriously to enable them solve problems in future.

The convention which begun on September 3 was organised by the university Dawa board.
