COUNCIL of East and Central African Football Association CECAFA has fixed the 2009 Senior Challenge Cup kick off date on November 28.

Kenya hopes to host the championship for the first time since 1994 when Tanzania beat Uganda 4-3 on penalties to lift the cup after a 2-2 stalemate in normal time.

Nicholas Musonye, the regional soccer governing body’s secretary general said from their secretariat in Nairobi yesterday that all member countries have been informed of the kick-off date.

The final of the region’s biggest soccer show will be held on December 13.

Kenya Football Federation is considering hosting matches in Nairobi, Kisumu and Mombasa. Their plans will be confirmed next month.

Musonye said that they had decided on the dates pending final negotiations with a prospective sponsor based in Kampala.

The official explained that CECAFA was persuading an Arab company based in Kampala to fund the games.

But the prospective sponser is insisting on staging the championship in Kampala.

“We are still negotiating (with the sponsor) and we shall inform you when we finalise. If we have to change the venue, we will do it,” Musonye remarked yesterday.

Uganda, hosts of the tournament in January, cruised to a record tenth title since the event was inaugurated in 1973.

The Sudanese Government sponsored the Kagame Clubs event and the U-17 championships held in July and last month respectively. Atraco grabbed the Kagame Cup while Uganda emerged champions of the U-17 crown.
