IMET a long-lost friend at my niece’s wedding recently. She looked classy and exotic with the afro hairstyle which attracted attention as it blended well with the colour of her attire.

The fact that she was one of the ushers was an inspiration. Images of legendary music icons like Micheal Jackson at his youthful age, Boney M and Diana Ross floated
in my mind.

The afro was in vogue back in 1960s and 1970s. It lost its appeal in the 1980s and has progressively made its way back to the 21st century. The hairdo can be worn in various ways either by growing natural hair or using an afro hair wig.

The other alternative is to plait. Sumaiya Nantongo, a sales lady at Charms, Jinja Road, Kampala, says the hair style is ideal for youthful ladies, middle-age and elderly women. It is ideal for both dog and cat faces.

“The afro wigs and hair pieces are available in black, maroon, offblack, colours and highlight. Dark-skinned ladies should go for black while brown ladies should opt for offblack and brighter colours like maroon,” Nantongo says.

The hair can be grown upto over three inches long and styled into an
afro. Artificial afro hair wigs can suffice for those who are not
well-endowed with long hair.

Meddie Nsubuga, a hair stylist at Ladies and Lords Salon on Jumbo Plaza says the afro hairstyle can be tinted in case one wants multicoloured highlights.

However, he insists that colours like green, purple, pink and blue should be left for the more daring. Prices for the afro hairstyle will range between sh60,000 and sh200,000.
