THE Uganda Super Cup has been abandoned and replaced with a new pre-season competition –– the Super Eight tournament.

Soccer governing body FUFA announced the change yesterday a few days before SC Villa was to take on URA in the Super Cup.

The Super Cup used to pit the league champion against the Kakungulu Cup holder.
The Super Eight event that will annually be a precursor to the Uganda Super League, will feature the top eight sides from the previous season.

The start of the 2009/2010 super league has consequently been extended by a week.

FUFA announced yesterday that the inaugural Super Eight Cup will kick off on Monday with Maji taking on URA at 2pm and Express against KCC FC two hours later.

Four matches will be played in the preliminaries whose winners will take on each other in the semi-final. The final is due September 19.
All matches will be at Nakivubo.

FUFA has staked sh2m for the winner, sh1.5m for the second while the third and fourth will take sh1m and sh500000 respectively.

“We want a sponsor for the cup. A similar cup is played in South Africa and Egypt and is very successful,” FUFA competitions committee secretary Moses Magogo said at the weekly press conference yesterday.

“The event will help us enhance competition as clubs battle to finish among the top eight.”

Meanwhile, a team of FIFA officials will this morning witness commencement of the laying of the modern pitch at the FUFA technical centre in Njeru. The facility has been with a grant from FIFA.
