THE Uganda Law Society (ULS) has condemned the civil unrest that occurred in Kampala and other parts of Buganda from Thursday.

“It is regrettable that both the political and cultural leadership in this country are causing an unnecessary and uncalled for crisis,” said ULS President Bruce Kyerere. “Peace loving Ugandans do not deserve nor desire the chaotic situation”.

He called for all parties involved to resolve the matter.

Chaos broke out after the Police stopped Buganda Katikkiro John Walusimbi from going to Kayunga in preparation for the Kabaka’s visit tomorrow.

The lawyers criticised the excessive use of force by the Government and also condemned the lawlessness exhibited by the people.

“What was the use of live bullets? What was the motive of those stealing and blocking roads and extorting money from the population,” asked Kyerere.

He demanded that a commission of inquiry be set up to establish who instigated the chaos.

The Law society also wants an investigation why some civilians have guns. “Guns should be preserve of the Police, army and to some extent the prisons, how do civilians obtain them, this is a worrying situation,” Kyerere said.

The society blamed the tensions between the Government and Mengo on both parties having “a lot of pride, ego, arrogance and disrespect.”

They called upon the state to re-establish law and order in all parts of the country.
