CIVIL Society Organisations have asked the Government to prosecute the officials responsible for the mismanagement and abuse of worker’s savings with the National Social Security Fund (NSSF).

In a statement issued on Thursday, the members noted that inspite of the misconduct and abuse of office, the Government has not taken any action.

“We protest against the Government’s failure to take punitive measures against those responsible. Its our contention that the Government has not only failed to respect and protect the rights and interests of workers who save with NSSF, but has also failed to punish those responsible for abuse of their money,” the members complained.

The statement was issued by Hurinet-Uganda, DENIVA and Uganda National NGO forum.

The members expressed concern that despite the fact that the Government has on several occasions changed the fund’s management, corruption and misuse of workers’ savings continues.

The members also attacked the NSSF board and management for failure to ensure the safety and effective use of the fund.

They asked Parliament to amend the NSSF Act and other laws relating to social security to provide for liberalisation of the sector and enable independent private actors to compete. They also asked for NSSF to give an account of how the savings are being spent.
