NATIONAL U-19 coach Sam Walusimbi has lamented the “lack of focus” displayed by the six players who disappeared before the team left Canada, where they unsuccessfully took part in the ICC U-19 World Cup Qualifier.

The team arrived yesterday short of the six players – Ahmed Yakoub, Emmanuel Nakaana, Geoffrey Nyero, Moses Okwera, Andrew Ochan and Ahmed Sangau – who run away two days before departure for home.

Walusimbi said the players showed little concentration during the tournament, which makes sense now that they opted to stay back in Canada. “The boys (who run away) were not really in it,” the former national senior team all rounder said.

“They were the nucleus of the team but were not concentrating. There were so many incidents (leading up to the players’ disappearance) and it is sad because these are young boys.”

Uganda finished seventh at the Qualifier, missing out on a world cup slot by one place. Walusimbi argues that the team could have easily finished higher in the standings because “many of the games” were winnable.
