ONLY four teams will be relegated at the end of this season’s Uganda Super League that kicks off tomorrow. Following the absence of Nalubaale which consequently brought down the number of teams from 18 to 17, there were questions as to whether five teams would still be relegated.

FUFA competitions committee secretary Moses Magogo yesterday explained they would maintain the top 13 teams in the top league which consequently means that only four clubs would be relegated.

“The regulations do not talk about the number of teams to be relegated but the number of teams to be retained in the super league,” Magogo explained.

“You never know whether some teams will drop out of the league along the way so we normally talk about the top 13 teams remaining in the league. Magogo stated that the 2010/2011 competition will be reduced to 16 teams.

“We will only promote three teams next season to have a league 16 clubs,” Magogo added.

“FIFA says our league is too big and they actually recommend that the event should have 14 or 12 quality teams.

The reduction of super league teams would enable world soccer body FIFA to easily avail coaching courses.

FUFA also intends to cut down the number of licensed players per club from 32 to 25.

“Club officials have attended courses where FIFA officials have explained the need to license quality players,” Magogo said.
“At the end of the day the league will have quality players.”
