I am a brilliant boy and I would like to become very rich in future. I want you to help me choose between going in for Civil Engineering, Pharmacy, and Neurosurgery. People who study these courses make a lot of money. Please help me to become rich in future by telling me the best science career to take.

A few years ago, the Government passed a policy to promote science education in the country. Thus, 75% the Government scholarships for university education go to science students. In addition, job opportunities for scientists are numerous across the globe.
Dr. Iga Matovu, the acting executive director of Mulago Hospital, says neurosurgery is not an independent course at any university.

It is a specialty under bachelor of medicine. Therefore, you ought to study a bachelor in human medicine degree, and later specialise in neurosurgery, depending on your passion and capacity.

Civil engineers are employed in the building sector, charged with the construction of civil infrastructures such as railways, airports, roads and houses.

David Luyimbaazi, the director for planning in the Uganda National Roads Authority, says the chances for civil engineers to live a reasonable life are higher compared to most other careers since they can get employment both in the public and private sector.

Similarly, pharmacy and medicine are equally good courses and can pay well since there are few pharmacists and doctors in the country. All the courses you want to pursue require you to study physics, mathematics, chemistry and biology.

However, your desire to become very rich is worrying. Even in the sciences, Dr. Matovu says one’s pay depends on his level of seniority.

Fagil Mandy, an education and career consultant, says telecommunications and petroleum-related courses, besides other sciences, are becoming very popular and vital for any student who desires to earn well.

But he says although most science careers pay well, the job itself may not make you rich.

According to him, there are several people, who have worked in various science professions, but failed to make it to richness. The academic programme to pursue should depend on your passion and performance in the subjects essential for that particular course. Dr. Matovu advises that career development, rather than money, should drive you.

But to become rich, Mandy says, you must be creative and think beyond your career. You must be innovative; get excited with doing new things from which you can earn an extra income.

Science is a good line, but to become rich, you ought to work hard. And, it is not too early for you to start working on the path to prosperity. As a student, you can begin engaging in small businesses, save some money and invest. By the time you graduate and get employed, you will have set yourself on the right track to affluence.
