EDITOR—Many times I marvel at the way some Ugandans react to Government policies without even examining them. Just last year the Police recommended helmets for all motor cyclists and their passengers. There was a lot of resistance about it.
Ironically, it is the passengers, especially women who made most noise. I hear it was because their hair would be messed up! Now, the other day a female friend of mine was admitted with a head injury after a boda-boda accident. Guess what happened? All the hair was cut off before treatment commenced.
Hospitals around Kampala are full of boda-boda victims and many have lost their lives. Are some people waiting to lose their dear ones before they can heed the Police call? A couple of weeks ago the Police started the same crack- down and again there was resistance! In Rwanda where I was a few weeks ago, the law is very effective.
Every motorcycle has two helmets—one for the cyclists and the other for the passenger. I saw very pretty women with very smart hair using helmets. Rwanda is Uganda’s neighbour and there are many Ugandans in Rwanda who wear helmets and many Rwandans in Uganda who can wear helmets freely.
Ugandans, let us always embrace what is good for us, and let us do that now! If the people in Rwanda can obey the law to save their lives, why can’t Ugandans follow suit?
