NOT for the first time this season, Ronald Ssemanda reached the five-wicket haul in a Premier league contest but unlike the previous occasion, his latest fiver was rewarded with victory on Sunday at Kyambogo oval.

The budding all-rounder claimed 5-28 to help Nile defeat KICC by 22 runs.

Ssemanda’s efforts did not only amount to a season-best outing at a personal level, they helped Nile end a losing run of three games in the Castle lager cricket league which had reduced the team’s title hopes to a pipe dream.

The last time Ssemanda took five wickets, 5-30 to be precise, was against the Rounders last month but Nile lost that match by 13 runs after failing to chase 141.

That result was the nadir of Nile’s slump, one that probably confirmed their inability to sustain a league challenge.

But hope is hope and Nile are still holding out for an improbable surge to this year’s title.

Opener Martin Ondeko, who scored a game-best 60 runs in the match, said: “We are praying for a miracle right now but we have to keep winning.”

This is why Nile need a miracle. The latest win took them to 19 points but that is only good for third place on the standings, behind the Wanderers and table-leaders Tornado, who have 30 points and a game in hand on Nile.

In the Plate league, Nand Kishore scored an unbeaten ton as SKLPS defeated JACC by 111 runs to go top of the standings while Premier were brought down to earth by CDT, a week after their record 447-run win over Colombo. CDT defeated Premier by one wicket.
