Ask the doctor with Dr. Gloria Ndagire
Dear Doctor, I have had a burning sensation, heat and heaviness around my chest for four months. Sometimes I fail to sit upright. One doctor said it is ulcers while the other said it is due to my high blood pressure since I am hypertensive. I have taken drugs but it returns. Help. Sham
Dear Sham, CHEST symptoms can be a result of many conditions. Inflammation of the stomach (gastritis) can cause a burning sensation in the chest (peptic ulcers) and can lead to ulcerations. This pain is associated with meals or hunger and belching.
Hypertension, if poorly controlled may result into enlargement of the heart muscle hence reduced blood supply to the muscle and chest.
This pain is associated with activity and relieved by rest. Your pain could be due to gastritis or ulcers. Go for many tests to ascertain the exact cause.
A stool exam will help rule out infection with helicobacter pylori (bacteria that causes gastritis.) Antibiotics and antacids may be helpful. Also have your heart checked and visit a hospital for a more comprehensive check up.
