Dear Sir,
My brother sat for S6 last year but he did not perform well because he was sick during the exam period. He got three subsidiaries but has refused to repeat A’level. Is it a good idea for him to do a diploma at Aptech and join university next year?

Dear Chris,

Public universities and colleges admit students who have scored a minimum of two principal passes in A’level.

According to Ismael Mulindwa, the principal education officer at the education ministry, if a student gets only subsidiaries, he or she is not eligible for admission to any public institution.

However, your brother did not fail his A’ level exams because he was dull, but because he fell sick. Mulindwa says that if your brother repeated S6, he probably could perform better.

You need to convince him that there is nothing wrong with repeating.

Over the years, Mulindwa says, students who failed S6 have repeated and managed to pass highly.

However, another alternative is for him to go for a diploma in any of the private vocational institutions in the country, like Aptech.

Aptech is a local chapter of Aptech International, which provides computer and information technology (IT) education at diploma and certificate level.

Hareesh Kumar, the institute’s business development manager, says Aptech is a credible institution registered with the education ministry and accredited by the National Council for Higher Education.

Kumar says since your brother sat A’level exams, he is eligible for admission, irrespective of his grades.

The institute has a variety of courses like software engineering and information systems management that your brother can study.

After a diploma, he will be eligible for admission to any university for a bachelor’s degree in the same or related field through the diploma holder entry schemes.

For instance, at Makerere University Faculty of Computing and Information Technology, hundreds of ordinary diploma holders are admitted each year for various courses.

Michael Niyitegeka, a faculty official, says the minimum requirement is a second class (Lower Division) diploma.

If your brother wants to go to Aptech instead of repeating S6, he should be ready to work hard and score at least a second class lower diploma.
