THE army and the Police have recovered 143 guns and 3,200 bullets in Teso since April 2008. The Third Division spokesperson, Capt. Henry Obbo, said the recovery was a sign that gun-related crimes in Teso were going down.
“When we started the recovery of arms in Teso, the situation was running out of hand, with several ambushes being carried out on trucks heading to the north.â€
The ambushes were also being carried out on Sudan-bound vehicles, Obbo explained. “Armed people were being hired to kill neighbours whom people have land disputes with.â€
The Government launched “Operation Restore Hope†last year after several gun-related crimes were registered in the district. “Thugs have been arrested and several court-martialled,†Obbo noted.
He cited the case of Grace Ichakuna, the first woman to appear before the Court Martial, who was sentenced to death in September 2008.
Ichakuna masterminded the shooting of her brother in-law in Bukedea district. Obbo warned that it was criminal to possess an unregistered gun.
He appealed to residents to report any person in possession of a firearm. Meanwhile, the army has recovered 27,199 guns within Teso and Karamoja sub-regions since the launch of the disarmament exercise in 2001.
Between January and September this year, the army recovered 808 guns, Obbo said.
