EDITOR—I refer to the story “Minister blames varsities for unemployment” published on October 19. The First Deputy Prime Minister Eriya Kategaya is right to point out that many universities in Uganda have embarked on offering irrelevant courses in order to generate money.

Irrelevant courses are accepted at Ugandan universities simply because some parents/guardians and students seem interested in them. They are ‘blind’ and don’t mind about the relevance of the courses on offer, as long as one is admitted for a degree course.

However, trouble comes when students graduate and fail to create or find jobs after spending a lot of money and precious time on such courses. With the mushrooming private universities in the country, parents need to be very careful.

Some universities are not real universities and are are only identified as such by signposts! For example, some ‘universities’ are dedicated spectators in the research and publications arena. The Government must address this anomaly.
