RESIDENTS in Kisenyi, a Fort Portal suburb, were stunned when locals from Bundibugyo district stormed Kisenyi and arrested five people, accusing them of stealing a cow.

The angry residents punished the suspected thieves by forcing them to eat raw meat and ordered them to pay sh700,000 for the cow.

The suspected thieves were identified as Hassan Mugisa, 28, a resident of Masaka-Rwebisengo in Bundibugyo district. Others are Grace Kansime, Mugisa’s wife, and their neighbours, Karoli Barugahare and Grace Banura.
They allegedly stole a cow belonging to Kakuza Mwikiriza and took it to Fort Portal for slaughter.

They then tried to sell the meat to Patrick Mwesige, a mchomo (roast meat) seller. However, they were arrested before they could sell the meat.

On interrogation, Mugisa said he was tempted by the devil to steal the cow.

The Western Regional Police spokesperson, Elly Matte, confirmed the arrest on Wednesday. He added that cattle theft was rampant in Rwebisengo and Butuku in Bundibugyo district. He attributed it to the approaching of the Christmas season.
