ABOUT 600 pupils of Busikho Primary School in Busia district are being taught under trees and in the open grounds after a storm blew off the roof of their classroom block.

The four-classroom structure for Primary Two and Three classes lost its roof and its walls were damaged. The incident happened at around 5:00pm on Monday after the pupils had gone home.

The head teacher, William Wandera, said on Tuesday that neither the school nor the parents could raise the money needed to repair the block. Members of the school management committee, led by the chairman, Ogutu Muruya, estimated the repair could cost sh70m.

He said the cracked walls needed to be broken down and rebuilt. Ogutu explained that the Anglican Church mission constructed the damaged block in 1950, and appealed to the education and disaster preparedness ministries to come to their rescue.

Busikho, in Samia South, is one of the three best performing primary schools in Busia.
