A ROW has erupted between a local musician, Matthias Walukaga and Samona Products, the manufacturers of medicinal cosmetics and toiletries.
The company accuses the musician of composing songs undermining their products and has requested the trade and industry minister to intervene.
In a June 26 letter to minister Kahinda Otafiire, the Samona Products communications manager, Bernard Beyongyera, said the Kadongokamu singer’s songs had affected their operations and market.
The letter was copied to the relevant ministries, including information, internal affairs, culture and gender, ethics and integrity.
“This gentleman has launched an attack on the managing director of Samona Products through his music,†the letter read.
Beyongyera said the songs, Bwino W’omutembeeyi, and Tuleppuke were intended to tarnish the name of Kasawuli Mukasa and his company.
The promotions manager, David Lukyamuzi, said the company lawyers, had writ- ten to Walukaga, warning him.
“Walukaga sent us a copy of his Bwino womutembeeyi asking the director to pay him sh60m to drop the song, but his demands were rejected,†Lukyamuzi said.
Walukaga denied allegations that his songs were directed to Kasawuli or his company.
“I’m offering this song to anyone who wants to buy it. I talked to Issa Ssekitto of Kampala City Traders’ Association who offered to get me a buyer,†Walukaga said.
He added that he would not apologise since he never intended to sing about Samona products.
Although it has not been officially launched, the song has created excitement in Kampala.
Walukaga and Kasawuli have had a long-standing quarrel over a woman, according to the media.
However, Kasawuli denies having had any affair with a woman connected to Walukaga.
