Suspected robbers netted - BUSIA Security organs have recovered six guns and arrested eight suspected robbers during swoops in two months. The acting district CID officer, John Othieno, said the swoops followed the increase in crime rate, where 534 cases were reported during August and September. The cases included robbery, defilement and drug abuse. Othieno added that the robberies resulted in the deaths of John Egessa the Dabani sub-county LC3 chairman and Hussein Kinanga, a taxi driver. Othieno said the suspects have been charged in court. The guns belonged to army deserters and security guards, he said.
Bank shortage linked to raids - KARAMOJA The shortage of banks in Karamoja has hampered the disarmament exercise in the region, the Kaabong resident district commissioner, Godfrey Kiwanda, has said. On Monday, Kiwanda said soldiers have to move 100km to access banks in Kotido. “Soldiers, who are on the Uganda-Sudan border and those in Abim and Kaabong districts, have to travel to Kotido to withdraw their salary.†On how this affects security, Kiwanda explained that according to a district survey, cattle rustlers tend to attack at the end of the month. He said when rustlers discover there are no soldiers in an area, they raid the villages and steal livestock.
Lions Club plants trees - GULU Lions Club International, a charity, has launched a tree planting exercise to preserve the environment and animals that are endangered by deforestation. Speaking during the launch of the one-year exercise in Gulu on Sunday, the governor of district 411A, Kamal Joshi, said they would plant 100 million trees. The project will involve Lions clubs in Uganda and Tanzania. Kamal added they would work with forestry and environment ministries of each country to plant the trees.
Disaster minister seeks more funds - KAMPALA Prof. Tarsis Kabwegyere has said under-funding of the disaster preparedness ministry is curtailing implementation of programmes. Kabwegyere said this on Thursday while closing a workshop on the use of information communication technologies for disaster management. The workshop was organised by Uganda Communications Commission.
