Samona to sue Walukagga

IT started as bickering between two men, over a woman believed to be a common love interest. But it later intensified into a war-of-words and full blown media scandal between Kadongo Kamu singer, Mathias Walukagga (left) and tycoon Kasawuli ‘Samona’ Mukasa, the proprietor of Samona Products Ltd, a cosmetics firm.
The object of contention was Aisha Nabukeera, Samona’s wife. Walukagga composed a song, Tuleppukke, in which he tells the story of a powerful man who threatened him (Walukagga) with death because he suspected him of moving out with his wife, an ex-girlfriend of Walukagga. In the song, Walukagga refers to his tormentor as “omutembeyi w’ebizigoâ€, a rather condescending phrase to mean ‘peddler of petroleum jelly’.
Samona, the maker of the popular Samona Jelly, publicly reacted to the song, claiming he was the one Walukagga was referring to. Then Walukagga then released, Bwiino w’omutembeyi (secrets of the peddler) and threw a spanner in the works.
A furious Samona has since written to media houses, claiming that the song is out to disparage him and Samona products. He copied the letter to the ministers of trade, information, gender, ethics and integrity and internal affairs and also sent it to the Uganda Investment Authority, the National Drug Authority, Uganda National Bureau of Statistics, Uganda Performing Rights Society, the Broadcasting Council, Uganda Manufacturers Association and KACITA. He further alleges that Walukagga released the song after a botched extortion plot to get sh60m from him and played a recorded voice he claimed was Walukagga’s, asking for the money.
Now, Samona, who also alleges that Walukagga is being used as a conduit by his competitors, has reportedly ordered his lawyers to start legal proceedings against the singer.
