FOUR more suspected rioters were yesterday charged with burning Nateete Police Station in September during the riots that paralysed Kampala city for three days.

The offence carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.
The accused were identified as Charles Ddamulira, Benard Ssamalu, Moses Kijjambu and John Segirinya.

On Monday, the Kampala Metropolitan deputy spokesperson, Henry Kalulu, told journalists that the four would be charged with terrorism.

A total of 29 other suspects were charged in September with terrorism over the burning of the same Police station. Terrorism carries a maximum sentence of death.

The accused appeared before Buganda Road Chief Magistrate Vincent Mugabo.
Mugabo remanded them to Luzira Prison until November 17 after they failed to produce substantial sureties.

One of the sureties, Emmanuel Nsubuga, lied to court that one of the suspects was his brother but he could not identify who it was.

“This is not a market place where you can choose what to do. The court should be respected,” Mugabo said.
The prosecutor asked court for more time, saying the Police were still investigating the matter. Earlier, the suspects had denied the charges.

Prosecution said Police uniforms, two wall clocks, furniture, and Police files containing vital information were destroyed in the fire. Other items destroyed included communication gadgets and exhibits that were being kept.

The riots were sparked off when the Buganda Kingdom premier, John Baptist Walusimbi, was refused to go to Kayunga to prepare for the Kabaka’s visit to the area.

More than 20 people were killed and property worth millions of shillings was destroyed.

Over 600 people have so far been arrested and charged in connection with the riots. Their cases are still pending.
