Women trained in embroidery

OVER 100 women from Wakiso and the neighbouring districts have been trained in embroidery, a course started by the Vice President, Prof. Gilbert Bukenya. The nine-month training was done by an Indian lady, Ela Pandya.

OVER 100 women from Wakiso and the neighbouring districts have been trained in embroidery, a course started by the Vice President, Prof. Gilbert Bukenya. The nine-month training was done by an Indian lady, Ela Pandya.
The women were initially trained in sewing and knitting, and gradually started producing quality garments. Last Friday, Prof. Bukenya visited the Kakiri Cottage Embroidery where garments were being exhibited, and was impressed by the women’s enthusiasm.
“I am happy that rural women have been given alternative means of generating income,†he said. Bukenya commended the women for making garments which have already attracted buyers and shop owners in Kampala.
“This is a lesson to leaders that many rural people have untapped talents, like craftsmanship, art and music, but only need someone to help them,†he said.
The programme has already been rolled out in Mukono, Kampala and Mpigi districts and would be a national initiative, Bukenya said.
He commended the women leader, Joyce Nabiryo, from Masuulita who has ensured the programme succeeds. Prof. Bukenya has initiated developmental programmes aimed at poverty eradication, food security and construction of houses.
